Northwest Calgary has a shiny new place to kick a ball around. The City has opened Rocky Ridge Athletic Park, a $26-million sports facility at 9700 Country Hills Blvd. NW, right beside the Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge.

The park's centrepiece is a pair of large artificial turf fields built for multiple sports, not just soccer. Around them you'll find spectator seating, field lighting for evening play, washrooms and on-site parking. City Council greenlit the project back in 2021, construction started in September 2024, and the work wrapped up this year.

It's also only phase one. The park is part of the bigger Rocky Ridge Athletic Complex, which will eventually add an indoor fieldhouse with a FIFA-standard field, slated for completion in 2028. The area's recreation offering is growing fast as northwest Calgary keeps expanding.

Want to actually play? Fields are bookable in advance through the City of Calgary website, currently in two windows: Thursdays from 5 to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Rates run $161.50 per hour for adult bookings and $127.30 per hour for minor groups, so a team splitting the cost is looking at a few dollars each. Transit users can take Calgary Transit Route 115, which links Tuscany Station with the Rocky Ridge/Royal Oak area, then walk to the park — the city's trip planner handles the details.

Why should a traveller care? If you're visiting Calgary with a team, a tournament, or just a travelling group that wants a proper kickabout, this adds a well-equipped, floodlit option on the city's northwest edge, next to one of the biggest YMCA facilities in the world. It's local news, but the kind that makes the city more playable for residents and visitors alike. Full details via Curiocity.
