Hurricane Rachel is reshaping cruise plans off the US West Coast. Virgin Voyages has pulled its ship Brilliant Lady off the Mexican Riviera for its October 10, 2026 sailing from Los Angeles, replacing calls at Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta with a coastal route through California and Baja California.

The line said it had been tracking both Hurricane Rachel and Tropical Storm Simon before making the call. The revised week-long itinerary now includes Santa Barbara, San Diego and Ensenada, with the ship back in Los Angeles on October 17 as originally scheduled. Ports willing to accept a cruise ship at short notice are limited, which is why the swaps stick close to the original route.

This is the second sailing in a row affected by the same storm system. The ship's previous cruise also lost a planned Cabo San Lucas visit because of Rachel, so the disruption is a pattern rather than a one-off for anyone sailing the Mexican Riviera this season.

Passengers on the affected sailing should note a few practicalities. Shore excursions booked through Virgin for the dropped ports will be cancelled automatically, with full refunds returned to the original payment method. The line has also flagged that the replacement stops will feel noticeably cooler than the Mexican Riviera in October, so a light jacket and warmer layers are worth packing even on what looks like a sunny southern California week.

The itinerary change isn't all bad news for travellers who've never explored the US and Baja coasts. Santa Barbara brings wine country close to the port, San Diego offers beaches, food and Balboa Park, and Ensenada is a quick gateway to Baja's Valle de Guadalupe wine region. Virgin pitched the new stops around coastal scenery, food, wine and culture — a fair summary.

For anyone booked on a West Coast cruise this autumn, the takeaway is to keep an eye on ship notifications and weather forecasts. Storm-driven reroutes mean refundable independent excursions become tricky, so booking experiences through the cruise line at this time of year gives you an easier path to your money back. It also pays to pack for two climates: the ports you planned for and the ones you might actually get.

The Brilliant Lady has been covering Virgin's first-ever Alaska summer programme and moved to its fall West Coast season out of Los Angeles in September, making it the line's most geographically flexible ship this year.
