A reviewer from Honeycombers Bali — a Sanur local who swears by quick Ubud resets — spent two nights at Impiana Private Villas Ubud, the newer sister property to the brand's well-regarded Seminyak resort. The verdict: this Sayan hideaway makes a strong case for a slow, pool-first stay in Bali's cultural heartland.

The resort sits on a slope above the Ayung River in Sayan, with 69 suites and villas spread across five enclaves, two restaurants and a spa. Because of the layout, staff shuttle guests around by buggy — a small detail that apparently turned into one of the trip's pleasures. Suites start from IDR 2,787,000++ per night, villas from IDR 4,429,000++, putting it in the upper-mid resort bracket for Ubud.

The writer checked into a Riverside Pool Villa, where high timber-beamed ceilings, woven panels and a sheer klambu bed canopy give the room a traditional Indonesian feel, alongside a walk-in closet and minibar. The real draw is outside: glass doors open onto a patio where a private pool faces the river close enough to hear it. Think bougainvillea, palm views, a daybed under a pergola, and the obligatory floating breakfast — pastries, fruit and juice drifting by on a petal-strewn tray.

Food turned out to be the main reason to leave the villa. Bijan, the all-day restaurant above its own rice terraces, runs a broad menu spanning Indonesian, Indian, Chinese, Italian and Western dishes, plus a sunken bar (11am to 10.30pm) pouring Balinese craft draft beers. Standouts were pan-seared salmon with lemon butter and an inventive Es Cendol 2.0 — the classic street-cart iced dessert reimagined as a pandan and coconut dome with cendol on the side. Down at Ayung Riverside, a poolside spot specialising in Asian BBQ and grills, there's complimentary afternoon tea daily from 4pm to 5pm (canapés, fruit, tea), and the sambal matah prawn linguine earned praise for its zesty Balinese kick. An optional mixology class lets guests blend their own arak cocktail by the river.

Rounding out the stay: treatments at Prana Spa with a river view, a pick-your-own scent ritual and herbal tea included.

Who's it for? Couples and honeymooners get the obvious win — private pools, river sounds, floating breakfasts — but the resort markets itself to families too, and the buggy-on-call setup helps anyone who doesn't fancy the climb.
