Flying to the Maldives usually means one thing: getting on with the paradise part as fast as possible. The country's national airline, Maldivian, has now made that a bit smoother with the launch of Maldivian Journey+, a new menu of optional add-ons that let passengers pick and pay for the extras they actually want.
Journey+ is essentially a personalisation programme. Rather than bundling everything into a premium fare, the airline is selling individual services separately, so a family hauling dive gear can buy extra baggage allowance, while a solo traveller on a tight connection might just pay for priority handling.
Phase one includes five services. Journey+ Premier adds priority check-in and baggage handling for domestic passengers, with international travellers getting priority boarding on top. Journey+ Bags lets you pre-purchase additional baggage at better rates than paying at the airport. Journey+ Relax opens access to selected Maldivian lounges, a genuinely useful option given that transfers between the international airport in Malé and domestic terminals or seaplane connections can involve a fair bit of waiting. Journey+ Upgrade gives international passengers the chance to move up a cabin class on select flights, subject to availability. And Journey+ Bites is a pre-ordered snack and drink combo for domestic passengers — handy on the short hops to island airstrips where catering is minimal.
Buying is refreshingly low-tech for now: services can be arranged up to 24 hours before departure via the airline's call centre, Viber, WhatsApp, its ticketing office, or through passenger and general sales agents. There is no self-service web flow yet, so messaging the airline a day ahead is the way to do it.
Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas said many of the services had been requested by passengers for some time, and described Journey+ as only the first phase. A second wave is planned to include seat selection and further options, which will matter most to anyone who has ever been separated from their travel companion on a 20-minute hop across the atolls.
Why does this matter to travellers? Maldivian is the airline that connects Malé's Velana International Airport with the domestic airports scattered across the country — often the final leg of a long-haul holiday. Until now, most of these comfort extras were simply unavailable. If your itinerary involves an international arrival and a domestic connection the same day, the priority handling and lounge access options could take real friction out of the transfer. Pre-booked baggage is also worth a look for divers, surfers and honeymooners whose luggage tends to exceed the standard allowance.
The programme is expected to grow, so it is worth checking what is on offer closer to your travel date. For now, if you are flying Maldivian and want a faster, comfier journey, a quick WhatsApp message 24 hours out is all it takes.
