British Airways is scaling back its Airbus A380 operation this winter. From the schedule change on Sunday, October 25 through March 27, 2027, the double-decker will only appear on four routes from Heathrow — down from seven last winter. The reason is largely mechanical: BA is midway through retrofitting its 12 superjumbos, trimming capacity from 469 to 421 seats and adding more business class at the expense of economy.

Miami keeps the biggest slice of the action. BA has flown the A380 there for 11 years and this winter goes double-daily — BA207 departing Heathrow at 9:45 AM and BA209 at 2:30 PM. That's twice the frequency of last winter, and 2026 will see more BA superjumbo flights to Florida than any year before. BA remains the only A380 operator in Florida.

The other three routes get one daily rotation each. Johannesburg's O. R. Tambo keeps a daily A380 (BA57, departing 9:15 PM), though the second daily flight is now a 777-300ER or 787-9. The BA56 arrival into Johannesburg at 4:55 AM+1 is, across all carriers, the earliest-arriving A380 into Europe on the return leg. San Francisco is daily on BA285 (11:45 AM out of Heathrow), matching last winter.

Singapore is the comeback story. BA's superjumbos first served Changi from 2014 to 2020, returned in 2024, then vanished again in May 2025. They're back as of September 6, 2026, making Heathrow–Singapore the only airport pair in the world served by three A380 operators: British Airways, Singapore Airlines and Qantas.

The losers this winter: Dubai, Los Angeles and Washington Dulles. Dulles was always a summer-heavy A380 route and has nothing scheduled; Los Angeles should see the type return on March 28, 2027, once the winter programme ends. Dubai's absence is about more than the retrofits — the Iran conflict and its knock-on effects around the Gulf have cut BA's overall Dubai service from the usual triple-daily to just daily across all aircraft, and flights to Abu Dhabi are suspended entirely.

For travellers, this matters in practical ways. If you specifically want the A380 experience — quieter upper deck, onboard lounges and the new premium-heavy cabin once retrofits land — Miami is your safest bet this winter, with two daily chances. Seat maps will differ between retrofitted and original aircraft, so it's worth checking the configuration before choosing a specific flight. And if you're booked to Washington or LA this winter expecting the big plane, you'll be on a 777 or 787 instead.
