Skytrax has handed down its 2026 World Airport Awards for cleanliness, and the results read like a tour of East Asia. All five of the world's cleanest major airports are in Asia, two of them in Tokyo, and the only North American name anywhere on the lists is Houston Hobby, which topped the category for airports handling fewer than 30 million passengers a year.

Tokyo Haneda took first place among major airports, a title it has owned multiple times — remarkable given it moved more than 91.6 million passengers in 2025, making it the world's third-busiest airport. Part of the secret is Niitsu Haruko, an "Environmental Meister" who won the All-Japan Building Cleaning Competition and now trains Haneda's cleaning crews. Her philosophy, as she told Tokyo Updates: put your heart into it and do the work boldly.

Seoul Incheon ranked second, blending human effort with tech — AI cleaning robots have worked alongside staff since 2022, and every spring the airport runs a multi-week deep-clean that even extends to washing the exterior walls. Incheon is also Skytrax's second-best airport overall, and it's easy to see why: gardens, a spa, an ice rink, a museum, cultural centres and serious shopping. A long layover here is a feature, not a bug.

Singapore Changi, the world's best airport overall in 2026, came third for cleanliness, down one spot from 2025. Its bathrooms are famously well run — colour-coded mops and cloths for different zones, plus feedback screens so problems get fixed fast.

Tokyo's other airport, Narita, took fourth. Travellers praise its spotless bathrooms and easy-to-navigate three terminals, plus a street piano, an observation deck, artwork and shelves of Japanese snacks and skincare. Narita has more flight options than Haneda but sits about an hour from central Tokyo by train.

Hong Kong International rounds out the top five and also ranks first out of 270 airports for washrooms. Better still, it offers free public showers stocked with toiletries and hair dryers — a genuinely great thing after a long-haul flight — and the airport Express gets you downtown in under half an hour.

Why should a traveller care? Because layovers and delays happen to everyone, and where you're stuck shapes how a trip feels. If you're routing through Asia in 2026, these five hubs offer the best odds of a comfortable, spotless wait. And if you're flying domestic in the US, Houston Hobby quietly outperforms every bigger American airport on this front.
