Glastonbury ticket day came and went in early October, and once again most of the 200,000-plus crowd spots went to someone else. If Monday morning found you staring at a 'sold out' page, there's no need to write off next summer. The UK festival scene is deep with alternatives — several of them smaller, greener and easier to actually get into.
Shambala in Northamptonshire (26-29 August 2027) has been running for over 25 years and takes sustainability seriously: vegetarian food only, fully renewable power, no plastic bottles, and a reusable cup scheme that the wider industry has since copied. Parties run until around 5am, and a dedicated family camping field with extra amenities makes it genuinely workable with kids. Recent line-ups have featured Bob Vylan, Hollie Cook and Chrome.
Also that same August weekend, Lost Village in Lincolnshire is the closest thing to a mini-Glastonbury in spirit — comedy, talks, music and dance spread across a woodland site, plus a lakeside spa offering massages, yoga and therapies. Daytime activities range from willow weaving to flower-crown making, with acts like Peggy Gou and Seth Troxler headline the nights.
For the eco-committed, Green Gathering (29 July-1 August 2027) is a non-profit, off-grid festival near Chepstow on the Welsh border, with free healing-arts workshops, wellness sessions and a Green Traveller Guide pushing attendees to pack light and travel low-impact. Further north, Knockengorroch in Galloway (27-30 May 2027) is a boutique grassroots event set among Scottish peaks with a leave-no-trace ethos — a good pick if you want your first festival of the season in May rather than August.
Food-led travellers have two strong options. Big Feastival (27-29 August 2027) takes over Blur bassist Alex James' Cotswolds farm each year, pairing pop-up chef kitchens with big-name headliners — Basement Jaxx, The Streets, Bastille and Rudimental topped the most recent bill. Wilderness in Oxfordshire (5-8 August 2027) leans more upmarket: on-site childcare, multi-course banquets, cultural talks, boutique camping from bell tents to campervans, and main-stage sets from the likes of Scissor Sisters and Jessie Ware.
Rounding out the list is Kendal Calling (29 July-1 August 2027), which began in 2006 as a two-day party in Kendal's Abbot Hall Park and has grown into one of the country's most scenic events, with Lake District lakes and hills behind stages that have hosted Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Boutique lodging is available at the Deer Lodge if regular camping doesn't appeal.
The practical takeaway: most of these sell out too, just slower. If Glastonbury 2027 is still the dream, the spring resale is your next shot — but locking in one of these now means next August isn't a write-off. They cluster heavily in late July and late August, so pick one date clash to sacrifice and book accordingly.
