Dubai's shopping scene keeps expanding, and the next big arrival has a name and a date: Skylight Mall, a 1.3-million-square-foot retail and entertainment complex on Al Khail Road, slated to open in 2027. Developed by Dubai Retail, it's being pitched as a 'super-regional destination' rather than a straightforward shopping centre.

The numbers alone make it a major addition: more than 360 shops spanning fashion, accessories, homeware, sport, family goods and everyday essentials. But the design philosophy is what sets it apart. Rather than keeping retail, dining and entertainment in separate zones, the layout is meant to flow from one to the next, so a visit can stretch into a full day out with family or friends instead of a quick errand run.

Location matters too. Al Khail Road cuts through some of Dubai's fastest-growing residential areas, and Dubai Retail says the mall is positioned to serve thousands of nearby residents who currently travel further afield for big-box shopping. For visitors, it adds another stop on a city that already treats malls as attractions in their own right.

Skylight isn't the only project in the pipeline. The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates are both getting extensions, and several new malls are due within the next few years in Sobha Hartland, Tilal Al Ghaf and Dubai Creek Harbour. Closer to term, First Avenue Mall Jumeirah opens later this year with a strong food-and-drink lean: LA celebrity favourite Jon & Vinny's, Nala (a polished canteen concept from the team behind Tashas) and a permanent branch of Lost in Tokyo are all confirmed for the line-up.

Why should a traveller care? Dubai has long been a place where malls double as day trips — think indoor ski slopes, aquariums and huge food halls — and this wave of openings means anyone planning a 2027 trip will have a genuinely different retail map to explore. If your Dubai routine is Dubai Mall plus a quick detour to Mall of the Emirates, it may be worth leaving room for the new contenders, especially the foodie-driven Jumeirah project if you're travelling sooner. Shoppers, families and anyone escaping the summer heat for a few hours of air-conditioned wandering will all find fresh options here.

We'll keep an eye out for confirmed tenant lists and opening dates as 2027 approaches.
