American Express cardholders have a new reason to look at Italy's flag carrier. A targeted Amex Offers deal gives a $225 statement credit when you spend $1,250 or more with ITA Airways — and it's attached to a long booking window that runs through November 30, 2026.

The mechanics are simple, but the terms matter. The ticket has to be booked directly through ITA Airways' website or app, charged in US dollars, and originate in the United States. Phone bookings, airport kiosks, lounge purchases and onboard sales don't count. The good news for flexible travellers: you only need to pay by the deadline, not fly by it — so you can lock in the credit now and travel whenever suits you.

There's a wrinkle worth checking before you enrol. Some accounts may be targeted for an alternative version that pays 22,500 bonus Membership Rewards points instead of the statement credit. On One Mile at a Time's valuation of roughly 1.7 cents per point, that version is worth about $382 — more than the $225 cash credit — so compare what appears on each of your cards before you click activate.

Card choice makes a real difference here too. If you have the offer on several Amex cards, the Platinum is the smart pick: it earns 5x points on airfare bought directly from airlines, worth an extra 8.5% return by that same valuation, and it bundles travel protections that help if your ITA flight gets delayed or cancelled. Stacked together, a $1,250 ticket booked on the Platinum could return around $331 in combined value — points plus statement credit — which is a solid discount on a transatlantic fare.

Who should care? Anyone already planning a US-to-Europe trip on ITA Airways, whether that's a Rome city break, onward connections across Italy, or one of the airline's other European routes. ITA is the successor to Alitalia and flies from US cities including New York, Boston, Miami and Los Angeles, so it's a legitimate option for a straightforward hop to Rome or beyond. If a $1,250+ fare was on the cards anyway — think peak-summer business class sales or even premium economy returns — the credit effectively softens the hit.

The catch is that Amex Offers are targeted and limited, and this one has appeared before, so availability isn't guaranteed. Check your Amex account's Offers tab on each card you hold, enrol the offer before booking, and make sure the purchase posts to that specific card. A $224.99 spend earns you nothing, and booking through an online travel agency voids it entirely — go direct.

For points collectors, the bonus angle is that the statement credit doesn't inherently stop you earning airline miles on the ticket itself, so a booked fare can still accrue ITA/Voloteca or partner miles on top of the Amex perks. Double-check the fare class earns miles if that matters to you.

It's a niche but genuinely useful deal — worth five minutes of your time if the offer is sitting in your account and Italy is on next year's list.
