Tenerife gets dismissed as a package-holiday island, and that's a mistake. Yes, the south is wall-to-wall resorts — but Spain's tallest peak, snow-capped Pico del Teide, looms over a place with far more range than most visitors realise. Condé Nast Traveller UK has pulled together its pick of the island's nine best hotels, and the framing is worth noting: skip the crowded southern complexes and you'll find cobblestoned Garachico and the colourful university town of La Laguna in the rugged, greener north, plus a hotel scene that goes well beyond all-inclusive buffets.
The hotel shortlist is split by intent. Gran Hotel Taoro takes the luxury crown; The Ritz-Carlton, Abama is flagged both for families and for adults seeking a retreat; and Royal Garden Villas Luxury Hotel & Spa is the boutique option for anyone who wants design and a sense of place rather than sheer scale. The editors say they looked for beautiful design, strong locations, warm service and genuine sustainability credentials — useful filtering if you're overwhelmed by the island's options.
Beyond the hotel balcony, there's plenty to justify a longer stay. Teide National Park crisscrosses the volcano with some of the best hiking trails in the Canaries, and the views from up there are on another level. Culture-wise, the island punches hard: the Carnival of Santa Cruz (February into March) is billed as the biggest parade outside Rio de Janeiro, and Santa Cruz's TEA art space holds a strong collection of surrealist Óscar Domínguez, a Tenerife native.
Practically speaking, Tenerife works as short-haul winter sun — flights from much of Europe are four to five hours — and it suits two very different trips. Book the big south-coast resorts if you want guaranteed warmth, pools and kids' facilities; head north or stay somewhere smaller if you'd rather hike by day and eat well in low-key towns by night. The smart move many repeat visitors make is combining both: a few nights at a resort, then a few in the north around Garachico or La Laguna.
If you've been writing Tenerife off, this is the case for giving it another look — with a hotel list that rewards doing a little research before you book.
