Some resorts reward loyalty with a fruit basket. Bandos Maldives has gone a different route, dedicating a patch of its house reef to a British couple who have been coming back to the island for nearly twenty years.
Kate and Andy Watkinson first stayed at Bandos in 2006 and have returned at least twice a year ever since. Their milestones read like a diving logbook come to life: they exchanged vows underwater at the resort in 2014, Kate logged her 1,000th dive (over 900 of them with the Bandos dive team), and Andy notched up his 900th dive, all with Dive Bandos, in September 2025. Kate's 50th visit — along with more than 400 dives on the same house reef — triggered the latest tribute.
To mark it, the resort has set aside a section of that reef as the K & A Coral Garden. It is part of Bandos' coral restoration project: Acropora fragments are attached to nylon ropes on frames, a method that lets young coral grow safely before forming a living habitat for fish and other marine life. As the garden matures, it will actively rebuild the biodiversity of the reef the couple has spent two decades exploring.
The gesture fits the couple as much as the resort. Kate and Andy are vocal about eco-friendly travel, and during the same visit they planted a frangipani tree outside their favourite villa — a second, land-based marker of their 50th trip. General Manager Ismail Rasheed called the garden a meaningful way to celebrate their connection while giving something back to the reef.
Why does this matter to anyone else planning a Maldives trip? Partly because it says something about Bandos itself. Resorts in the Indian Ocean come and go; ones that guests return to fifty times are rare. Bandos is one of the older, more established islands near Malé, known for a strong house reef you can swim straight off the beach — no boat or seaplane required. The coral garden project also signals a resort taking reef health seriously at a time when Maldivian corals face bleaching pressure.
There is also a practical takeaway: house-reef diving is one of the cheaper ways to experience the Maldives. If you are a certified diver, picking a resort with a reputable on-site dive centre and healthy home reef — like Dive Bandos here — can cut costs dramatically compared with daily boat excursions, and repeat guests often negotiate loyalty perks.
For couples hunting a place with genuine history and an underwater story of its own, the K & A Coral Garden is a nice reminder that the best resort relationships can run deeper than a points balance. Just maybe start counting your visits now.
