San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye will host a wheelchair distribution on December 7th, as the California-based Wheelchair Foundation makes its annual trip back to Belize. The event, staged at Central Park with a noon ceremony and support from the San Pedro Town Council, is being coordinated locally by the Rotary Club of Ambergris Caye.

The numbers behind the visit are substantial. The foundation plans to ship 560 wheelchairs into the country on this trip alone, handing them out to approved applicants in Belize City, mainland communities and on Ambergris Caye. Island residents who need one should act quickly: applications must be submitted by October 30th, and requests for San Pedro go through 615-4576. Rotarians will help review the forms.

This is the charity's fifth year operating in Belize. Over that time it has delivered more than 4,700 wheelchairs nationwide — a striking figure for a country of around 400,000 people. Globally, the foundation's own records put its total at over 1.2 million wheelchairs across 156 countries since it was founded in 2000 by real estate developer and philanthropist Ken Behring. The model is simple: provide manual wheelchairs to people who need mobility support but can't afford one, working through partners like Rotary clubs, the Knights of Columbus and Sister Cities International to find recipients and handle logistics.

"Through this event and God's blessing, we provide the gift of mobility," volunteer Glenn Perry told The San Pedro Sun, crediting the foundation's supporters.

Why does this matter to travellers? Accessibility in Belize — and on Caribbean islands generally — is often patchy. Resorts advertise wheelchair-friendly rooms, but everyday infrastructure like ramps, paved paths and beach access can be inconsistent. Initiatives like this one quietly change that reality for locals, and by extension for visitors: more people moving independently around town, and a community that's increasingly aware of mobility needs. If you or someone in your party travels with a wheelchair, San Pedro's flat, compact town centre is one of the more navigable parts of Belize, and the December date is a good reminder that local organisations there are actively engaged with accessibility. Travellers with time to spare who want to give something back could even look into the service clubs involved — the Rotary Club of Ambergris Caye welcomes visitors at its meetings.

For anyone in Belize who needs a chair, the essentials are: get the application form in before October 30th, and note that distribution happens December 7th in San Pedro, with other handovers in Belize City and the mainland. Details are available at wheelchairfoundation.org.
