American Airlines is quietly redrawing its route map for 2027, and the changes touch both coasts. The headline move: the airline's seasonal summer nonstop from New York to Bozeman, Montana — the gateway to Yellowstone — is shifting from LaGuardia to JFK, where it can fly four days a week instead of the Saturday-only slot LaGuardia permits. It starts June 18, 2027, on a Boeing 737-8.

The second JFK addition is a twice-daily service to Seattle-Tacoma launching April 6, 2027, on an Airbus A321neo. That route matters more than it looks: Seattle is Alaska Airlines' main hub, and the two Oneworld partners just announced plans to fold Alaska into American's transatlantic and transpacific joint ventures. Expect tighter scheduling and coordinated fares between them in the years ahead. For travellers, it means more nonstop options between New York and the Pacific Northwest — though American will be up against Delta, JetBlue and Alaska on the same routes, with United also flying both from Newark.

The additions come at the cost of six route cuts as American trims planned growth for summer 2027. Chicago O'Hare to Lincoln, Nebraska ends in April; Dallas-Fort Worth to Albany won't resume next May; Miami loses both Tulum and Montreal in January; Phoenix to Provo, Utah is also axed in January; and the LaGuardia-Bozeman flight simply migrates to JFK.

No city loses American service altogether, but three smaller markets — Lincoln, Provo and Tulum — will be left with nonstop flights only to Dallas-Fort Worth. So if you live in one of those towns, your connecting options just narrowed considerably.

Why the retrenchment? Fuel. Jet fuel was averaging $4.43 a gallon when the news broke — nearly double the $2.42 American paid on average in 2025 — thanks to supply chain disruption tied to the US-Israel conflict with Iran. At those prices, marginal routes stop making sense. At the same time, American is investing heavily in the premium experience: new business class suites, seatback screens across its entire narrowbody fleet, and refreshed lounges, all aimed at higher-spending flyers.

For holidaymakers, the practical takeaways are simple. Ski and Yellowstone-bound travellers out of New York get a more convenient JFK departure and four weekly frequencies come summer 2027 — book early for peak July and August. Seattle flyers from JFK gain a new competitive option, which should help fares. And anyone relying on the six cancelled routes should check connecting itineraries through DFW, since that's now the only direct link for Lincoln, Provo and Tulum.
