Auckland is hitting its school-holiday stride with sun forecast and a weekend schedule that stretches well beyond the usual brunch-and-beach routine. Whether you're in town for a few days or live there and need an excuse to get out, here's what's on.

Bargain hunters should circle Howick, where the Rotary Club of Howick's Bookarama marks its 25th-plus year as the city's biggest community book fair. Over a thousand boxes of donated books, puzzles, games, DVDs, CDs and vinyl go on sale at Howick College Gymnasium, with proceeds topping $650,000 given to the local community over the years. This year adds a silent auction featuring signed books from the likes of Brandon Sanderson, Callie Hart and Liza Minnelli — a genuine collector's lure. Serious shoppers can pay a $40 koha entry for Thursday's Early Bird session; entry is free Friday through Sunday.

Football fans have a date too: Auckland FC open their A-League season at Go Media Stadium against Melbourne Victory on Saturday, October 17. The club has leaned hard into match-day theatre, with themed games — think line-dancing and pony rides for 'Country', a Ferris wheel for 'Carnival' — and the spicy home clash with Wellington Phoenix lands on November 7. Single tickets are already on sale.

If you'd rather laugh at politics than read about it, Dave Armstrong's comedy The Surprise Party opens at Takapuna's Pumphouse Theatre for a short run, starring Alison Quigan and Stephen Papps as members of a political party scraping through another election cycle.

Culture options are unusually strong this week. At Auckland Town Hall, Scottish conductor Sir Donald Runnicles — regarded as one of the great Strauss interpreters — leads the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra with soprano Madeleine Pierard in Four Last Songs and other Strauss works contemplating love and mortality. Over at Q Theatre, Manawa Ora: Taurite sees 20 young performers aged 13-17 present a new show built with artists including Diggy Dupé, blending music, dance and storytelling around the idea of finding balance.

Early risers can join New Balance's free 5km city run departing from its new Queen St store at 8.15am on Saturday, with food, music and giveaways after — registration required, all paces welcome. And if you fancy a road trip, the Waikato Home & Garden Show runs all weekend at Claudelands Events Centre in Hamilton, with The Block Australia judge Shaynna Blaze styling rooms live on a new Style Stage.

Further out, the calendar stays busy: Cabaret at ASB Waterfront Theatre, Jesus Christ Superstar at The Civic, the Auckland Diwali Festival on October 31-November 1, and NZ Opera's The Pearl Fishers in Christchurch mid-month. Waiheke Island even gets in on the act with the play Elling at Artworks Theatre from late October.

For travellers, this is a good snapshot of why Auckland rewards a weekend visit in spring — plenty of one-off events, easy central venues and increasingly reliable weather.
