Discover has flipped its usual end-of-year script. Instead of the holiday-shopping categories cardholders have come to expect, the fourth quarter of 2026 rewards restaurants, entertainment and utilities at 5% cash back.
The offer applies to the Discover it Cash Back and Discover it Student Cash Back cards, and runs through Dec. 31. One catch applies across the board: the $1,500 spending cap is combined, so every eligible purchase in all three categories counts toward the same limit. Max it out and you'll pocket $75 for the quarter; anything beyond that earns the standard 1%.
What's inside each category:
- Entertainment: movies, concerts and live sporting events — a first for Discover's rotating categories.
- Restaurants: everything from sit-down meals to fast food, takeout and delivery. Dining has appeared twice already in 2026 but this is its first-ever Q4 slot, handy for holiday meals out.
- Utilities: electricity, water, internet and phone bills return for a second consecutive year. Since these are recurring expenses, they're an easy way to grind toward the cap without changing your habits — just check whether your provider charges a fee for paying by card, which could eat into the reward.
The bigger story is what's missing. Amazon featured as a Q4 category every single year from 2017 through 2025, with Target and Walmart also showing up in several of those quarters. None of them made the cut this time, so if you were planning to stack holiday shopping rewards, you'll need a different card for that.
If you haven't activated yet, you can still do it through the Discover app or your online account — select the card, find the rewards section and tap 'Activate Now'. Cardholders whose accounts have already migrated to Capital One can activate through Capital One's app instead; the terms are unchanged. Don't dawdle: the 5% rate is not retroactive, so any eligible purchase made before you activate earns only the base rate. Activate on Oct. 15 and your Oct. 10 dinner out earns 1%, not 5%.
New cardholders have an extra incentive via Discover's Unlimited Cashback Match: at the end of year one, Discover automatically matches all cash back earned, so a maxed-out quarter's $75 becomes $150. Across four quarters, the 5% categories can theoretically yield up to $300 — or $600 with the match.
Why should a traveller care? If you're holding a Discover card during the festive season, this quarter rewards the things trips are actually made of — dinners out, concert and sports tickets — plus household bills that keep running while you're away. Just activate first, spread spending across the three categories to hit the cap, and check whether a different card in your wallet beats 5% for any given purchase before you tap.
