If your winter escape plans involve Abu Dhabi, there's now a comedy-shaped reason to time it for early January. Scottish stand-up Kevin Bridges has been added to the Abu Dhabi Comedy Season line-up, playing Etihad Arena on Yas Island on Saturday, January 9, as part of his Here if You Need Me world tour.

Tickets start at Dhs295 and are available through Platinum List, TicketMaster and the Etihad Arena website. Organisers are expecting strong demand, so booking early is the sensible move if you want a decent seat.

Bridges is a big draw by any measure. He started doing stand-up just after turning 17 in 2004 and has become one of the most recognisable British comedians of his generation. His previous tours — Overdue Catch-Up, Brand New Tour and A Whole Different Story — have broken box office records and collectively played to more than two million fans worldwide. His material, heavy on wry observations about everyday life, has obvious appeal for the huge British and Irish expat community in the UAE, as well as visitors.

He's not arriving in a vacuum either. The current Comedy Season line-up at Etihad Arena is stacked. American crowd-work specialist Morgan Jay plays October 11, followed by Canadian veteran Russell Peters on October 25 — the first comedian to headline both London's O2 Arena and Madison Square Garden. Mo Amer, the Palestinian-Kuwaiti-born star of Mo, takes the stage on November 6, with Iranian-American Maz Jobrani the following night. Filipino TV favourites Jose Manalo and Wally Bayola, best known from Eat Bulaga!, close out that stretch on November 22.

For travellers, this turns a Dubai-and-Abu Dhabi sunshine break into something with an anchor event. Etihad Arena sits on Yas Island, which conveniently bundles together several of Abu Dhabi's biggest attractions: Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World and the Yas Marina Formula 1 circuit are all within a short hop, and there's no shortage of hotels on the island at various price points. You could feasibly spend a long weekend doing theme parks by day and comedy by night.

Abu Dhabi in January is also the emirate at its most pleasant — daytime temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, cool evenings and none of the punishing summer humidity. It's peak season for good reason, so expect higher hotel rates around big events and book accommodation alongside your tickets.

Worth noting for anyone flying in specifically for the show: Yas Island is roughly a 90-minute drive from Dubai, and Abu Dhabi International Airport is closer, though many international carriers offer more flights into Dubai. Either way, the arena is well served by taxis and ride-hailing apps.

If a big-name gig is the excuse you needed to book that winter sun trip, a Saturday night with Kevin Bridges — plus the option of theme parks, beaches and January-perfect weather around it — is a solid one.
