Hà Nội is gearing up for one of its biggest nights of the year. On October 10, the city marks the 72nd anniversary of Capital Liberation Day with fireworks over two of its most famous bodies of water — Hồ Tây (West Lake) and Hoàn Kiếm (Sword) Lake — and the programme around it is packed with music, theatre and new ways to explore the capital.

The headline show is at West Lake, where 900 fireworks rigs will be installed on the water for a mix of high-altitude and low-altitude bursts, water fireworks and pyrotechnic effects, all synchronised to music. It's pitched as a large-scale light-and-fireworks performance rather than a simple bang-and-done display. A second site in front of the Hà Nội Post Office in Hoàn Kiếm Ward gets its own battery of 350 rigs on Sword Lake. Both displays run 15 minutes, starting at 9pm.

The fireworks are just the centrepiece. Through the whole of October, the city is staging cultural events at its heritage spaces, including two large-scale art shows at the Hồ Gươm Opera House on October 9 and 10. On the evening of the 10th itself, Bà Kiệu Temple Flower Garden by Hoàn Kiếm Lake hosts "80 Years – The Epic of Hà Nội Lives On", marking the 80th anniversary of the capital's armed forces. Every Friday and Saturday from October 2 to 31, the city's Drama, Chèo and Cải lương theatres put on performances at 8pm, including shows built around the legend of Hoàn Kiếm Lake. Film fans get 40 mobile screenings plus 15 in cinemas across the city.

For visitors planning a longer stay, the tourism department has put together 72 suggested itineraries — one for each anniversary year — covering history, architecture, craft villages, food and creative districts. A smart tourism app called HanoiGo is also being launched, bundling destinations, services and tour products into one place.

There's more on the calendar: the Hà Nội Autumn Festival runs October 16 to 18 and the Beverage Festival October 9 to 11, while the book festival and a dragon boat and SUP racing tournament on West Lake have already drawn big crowds earlier in the month.

For travellers, this is a strong window to be in Hà Nội. October brings cooler, drier weather than the summer months, and the anniversary programme gives you fireworks, opera, traditional chèo theatre and food festivals in a single trip — much of it free or low-cost and concentrated around the Old Quarter and the lakes. Just note the 9pm fireworks start and claim a lakeside spot early; West Lake and Hoàn Kiếm will draw serious local crowds.
