If you're heading to Zagreb in early autumn and planning to ride the cable car up Medvednica mountain, check your dates. The Sljeme cable car will be out of action from Monday 5 October until Sunday 25 October while it gets its annual technical inspection and servicing, according to operator ZET.

This is more than the routine monthly maintenance the lift normally receives. Technicians will go through the whole machine: the drive system, the cable itself, the towers and pulley assemblies, brakes, the main control system, and the electronics and sensors. The idea is to confirm everything meets the manufacturer's technical requirements and safety regulations before normal service resumes. ZET has deliberately timed the closure for a stretch when rider numbers are typically lower.

The lift runs from the city up to Sljeme on Medvednica, the forested mountain that looms over the Croatian capital. It's a year-round draw — hikers, mountain bikers and winter sports fans all use it, and the top station delivers wide views back over Zagreb. It's one of the easiest big-city-to-mountain combos anywhere in Europe: you can be on a trail within half an hour of leaving the centre.

If your trip falls inside the closure window, you're not stuck. Bus route 140 runs between Mihaljevac and Sljeme, so the mountain stays reachable by public transport the whole time. Services should restart after 25 October once the inspection wraps up.

Why it matters for travellers: Medvednica is a genuinely good half-day or full-day escape from Zagreb, and the cable car is the fun, fast way up. If you're visiting between 5 and 25 October, either plan around the bus or save the ride for another visit. Outside those dates, it's business as usual — and you can ride knowing the machinery has just had a thorough once-over.
