Milan just had the kind of night bartenders dream about. At the 2026 World's 50 Best Bars ceremony - hosted in the Italian city for the first time ever, on Wednesday 7 October - Moebius Milano was named the best bar in Europe and ranked second in the world. No Italian bar has ever climbed higher.
For a city whose 1985 Amaro Ramazzotti advert coined the slogan "Milano da bere" (Milan to drink), it feels like a well-earned full-circle moment. Drinking culture runs deep here: Campari opened its café in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II back in 1867, and Bar Basso is credited with accidentally inventing the negroni sbagliato in the 1970s. What's changed is the ambition level. A new wave of venues is borrowing techniques from fine dining and blurring the line between bar, restaurant and cultural space.
Moebius is the clearest example. Opened in 2019 by Lorenzo Querci in a former textile warehouse near Milano Centrale, the 700-square-metre space holds a bar, a record shop, live music, a bistrot and a fine-dining restaurant - all arranged around a 700-year-old Andalusian olive tree. Bar manager Giovanni Allario's cocktails lean kitchen-ward: the signature pesto martini mixes vodka, vermouth, homemade pesto and white balsamic vinegar, while the carrot bamboo pairs vermouth and gin with carrot, yuzu and shiso. In 2025 the bar placed seventh and won the Highest Climber Award; this year's result is its peak so far.
There's plenty beyond Moebius, too. 1930, once a strictly invitation-only speakeasy, moved to a public spot beneath MAG La Pusterla in 2025 and now pours a caviar martini and a parmigiano colada (it landed at number 94 in the extended 2026 ranking). The Moebius team also runs Lubna near Fondazione Prada, a listening bar where drinks riff on cooking over fire. Madrid's theatrical Salmon Guru has opened a comic-book-coloured outpost near the Arco della Pace. And for tradition, Rita in Navigli has been mixing since 2002 - its Gin Zen with ginger and lime dates to 1998.
For travellers, this makes Milan a proper weekend destination in its own right, not just a layover between fashion districts. Book Moebius well ahead now that the awards have landed, build an evening around Navigli's canal-side bars, and save room for aperitivo - the ritual that started it all.
