Most drivers blast along Interstate 35 between Kansas City and Wichita without a second thought for the little town sitting roughly midway between them. That's their loss. Ottawa, home to fewer than 13,000 people on the banks of the Marais des Cygnes River, has quietly become one of the Midwest's better trail bases, plus a genuinely pleasant spot for a weekend wander.

The headline act is the trail network. Two of Kansas' longest rail trails — both designated state parks — start or pass through downtown. The 51-mile Prairie Spirit Trail, the state's first rails-to-trails state park, begins at the Old Depot Museum and runs south, while the 117-mile Flint Hills Trail cuts east to west. The two meet at Legacy Square, at the corner of South Walnut Street and West 1st Street, and both follow old railroad lines through open countryside. If you'd rather keep it short, the sub-mile paved loop at Kanza Park connects to the Prairie Spirit Trail and is an easy evening walk or bike ride.

Downtown itself is on the National Register of Historic Places, and it shows. Founded in the 1860s, Ottawa has kept a good chunk of its 19th-century streetscape, anchored by the red-brick Romanesque Revival Franklin County Courthouse. A short walk away is Plaza 1907, reportedly the oldest operating purpose-built cinema in the United States, all Art Deco flourish. Local shops line Main Street — Country Living and Boutique for gifts and homeware, Front Porch Antiques for a proper rummage.

The Old Depot Museum is the standout stop for families. Housed in a late-1800s train depot, it packs in local history exhibits, a large model railway and a one-room schoolhouse, and it's free to enter, which makes it an easy win on a budget day out.

Want more trail time? Three lakeside state parks sit within about a 30-minute drive. Hillsdale State Park has miles of equestrian trails for horseback riders, Clinton State Park's rougher terrain suits hikers and mountain bikers, and Pomona State Park keeps things family-friendly with short scenic paths and a disc golf course.

Ottawa works equally well as a day trip or a low-key weekend stop. From Wichita it's around two hours by car; Topeka and Lawrence are both under an hour away. Flying in, Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is just across the state line in Missouri. If you're travelling between the two big Kansas cities anyway, this is an easy detour that trades highway monotony for historic streets, free museums and over 160 combined miles of trail at your feet.

Why it matters: for cyclists, hikers and horse riders looking for a cheap, uncrowded base with genuine small-town charm, Ottawa delivers the kind of under-the-radar option that's getting harder to find in the Midwest.
