A routine early-morning commute for hotel workers in Mexico's Riviera Maya turned fatal on Wednesday when a staff bus rolled over on the federal highway just short of Tulum airport. Three people died and around 20 more were hurt, three of them seriously.
The bus had set out from Felipe Carrillo Puerto before dawn, picking up employees in small inland communities including X-Hazil Sur, Señor and Tuzik as it headed toward a hotel in the resort corridor. Around 6:00 a.m., roughly two kilometres from the airport, the driver swerved for reasons that have not been explained and the vehicle flipped onto the highway shoulder.
Emergency crews found three passengers trapped beneath the overturned bus; all three were pronounced dead at the scene. Five ambulances responded, taking four of the injured to hospital in Felipe Carrillo Puerto and the remainder to Tulum. The driver was driven to hospital by a colleague and later questioned by police. Authorities have not said what caused the swerve, and an investigation is ongoing.
For visitors, the immediate takeaway is reassurance of a sort: this was a worker transport on an inland route from Maya villages, not a tourist transfer on the coastal hotel zone highway. But the crash is a stark reminder that road safety in Quintana Roo is a real consideration, especially on rural stretches of the federal highway south of Tulum, where staffing buses, trucks and slow-moving vehicles share two-lane roads with tourist traffic. If your holiday plans involve ground transfers between the Riviera Maya and the interior — Sian Ka'an tours, trips to Felipe Carrillo Puerto or onward to Bacalar — it's worth booking with established operators whose vehicles are well maintained, wearing seatbelts where they exist, and factoring in extra time on early-morning drives along this corridor.
Tulum airport itself was unaffected, and flights and hotel operations in the zone continue as normal. The story matters most to travellers heading to the southern Riviera Maya and the Sian Ka'an biosphere area, who will pass through exactly this stretch of road.
