Niue, one of the world's smallest nations, is getting big recognition. The Niue Ocean Wide (NOW) Trust has been named a finalist for the 2026 Earthshot Prize, shortlisted in the Revive Our Oceans category from a field of 15 candidates worldwide. The awards ceremony takes place in Mumbai on 17 November.
The trust oversees the protection and sustainable management of more than 300,000 square kilometres of Pacific waters — a staggering footprint for an island of around 1,600 people. Central to that work is the Niue Moana Mahu Marine Protected Area, which covers roughly 40 percent of Niue's Exclusive Economic Zone, one of the highest proportions of fully safeguarded ocean territory anywhere.
What makes the NOW model interesting is that it's not framed purely as conservation. The trust uses what it calls innovative ocean finance to put local families, communities and partner organisations in charge of managing their own marine resources. The aim is to keep the benefits on the island — through sustainable fisheries, research, education, and tourism — rather than having Niue act merely as a beneficiary of outside environmental programs. It's a whole-of-island approach that the trust hopes will become a template for ocean finance across the Pacific.
For a nation where the sea supplies food, income, and cultural identity in equal measure, protecting it isn't an abstract environmental goal. It's economic planning. The trust argues that a healthy ocean and a resilient local economy are the same project, and the Earthshot shortlist suggests a global audience agrees.
Why should travellers care? Niue remains one of the Pacific's least-visited and most rewarding destinations — no crowds, dramatic limestone coastline, some of the clearest water you'll ever snorkel, and humpback whales that visit between July and October. Booking a trip here directly supports an economy built around the very conservation work now being recognised. Diving, whale swims, and reef walks all operate within the managed waters the trust protects, so your holiday spend and the ocean's health are genuinely linked.
Whether NOW Trust takes home the prize in Mumbai or not, the finalist listing puts a spotlight on how small island states can fund and lead their own environmental future — and gives travellers one more reason to put this under-visited coral island on the map.
